Creating change is a tricky art. Shifting systems and society toward healthier, more-resilient behaviors and dynamics, along with greater equity, requires not only a robust set of craft-based tools but also a depth of personal maturity and capacity for introspection.

Fortunately, the design for social innovation landscape is burgeoning with activity at all levels of participation. Over the past several years, foundations, VCs, business people, and even politicians have begun to realize what many designers have always felt: Design can be a powerful catalyst for engaging complex networks of stakeholders and solving unimaginable challenges.

The work of the people highlighted in this issue provide guideposts that point us toward what successful system interventions and a more sustainable society might look like in action.
