Design Collaboration

Once upon a time, a company looking to make a splash using design had only to come up with the money to engage a “rock star” designer. Today, people of all generations around the world seem to have arrived at a position of confidence about their own opinions and their responsibility for their own well-being and happiness. The community is worldwide, but at the same time, social media has brought out the individual in us all. We are more willing to offer our own opinions in a spirit of collaboration. The influence of networks and social exchange, knowledge sharing, and organizational learning is changing our cultural intelligence and influencing our decision-making about design.

We felt that a theme of design collaboration should include articles about the benefits of collaborative design, and explore effective options in the collaborative process. And we wanted to determine what kind of information and processes are needed to support effective collaboration, how design managers may lead collaboration, and which disciplines should be part of the cross-functional team. We also thought it would be interesting to consider which talents are best maintained in-house and which might be best sought from consultants; we pondered crowd sourcing as a viable collaborative strategy. And, as usual, thought leaders around the world stepped up to present their research, opinions, and professional points of view on this topic.
