Leading Innovation Through Design (Issue 2)

Volume 8, 2013

In August 2012, the Design Management Institute (DMI) hosted an academic conference with the theme of “Leading Innovation through Design.” The conference, which took place in Boston, DMI's hometown, aimed to advance the state of the art in design management research, theory, and practice. The work presented in this edition of the Design Management Journal is the result of a thorough double-blind review process of the 195 papers submitted to that conference. These five papers are highly diverse and reflect the breadth of topics addressed--topics the conference organizers hope design management researchers can now legitimately address.

The DMI conference brought a scholarly lens to the ways that design may help to both shape and implement innovation. Organizations, in both the for-profit and the not-for-profit sectors, are seeking competitive advantage through innovation in their product or service offerings, structure, processes, and business models. The conference offered a means for researchers and thinkers to come together to critically review the importance of design and to work toward design management becoming a credible and full participant in the theoretical corpus. We hope that the papers presented here both reflect and build upon those expectations.

The papers presented in Boston highlighted the role of design in organizational effectiveness and success--particularly in the ways it can improve the new product development process, contribute to better strategic thinking and decision making, and be an important element in the leader's toolkit. They were organized around seven major themes:

1. Innovations in design research methodologies and management processes

2. Bridging research and practice in the management of design

3. Design-led innovation in business models

4. Developing design-thinking skills

5. Design-led innovation in products and services

6. Design-led innovation in organizations and the workplace

7. Innovations in design management education
