dmi:Webcast "Designing Equitable Futures"

Jessica Jacobs, MFA, Associate Professor, Business & Entrepreneurship Department, Columbia College Chicago; PhD Student, IIT Institute of Design

Many innovation-oriented organizations are shifting their business models to be more ethical, inclusive, and equitable, yet there is uncertainty in how to make the business case for these new imperatives. Is there a paradoxical choice between social impact and market growth? Jessica Jacobs, an Associate Professor in the Business & Entrepreneurship Department at Columbia College in Chicago will share insights from fieldwork research which includes immersive studies of design-led organizations that are shifting their business models to be more responsible. A new and promising direction in Design is under development through practices oriented towards creating new economies--and consequently new growth opportunities--based on designing equitable business solutions. This session explores how we might redefine the paradox as a catalyst to reimagine the value of designing for impact.

dmi:Webcast "Designing Beautifully?
Design is failing to fully live up to its ideals. Could restoring its long-lost embrace of beauty help?"

Nathan Hendricks, Chief Creative Officer, LPK

Creating positive human outcomes is a core ideal of design, but in most design-mature societies, the state of the human condition is in worrying decline. Could we be missing something? In this webinar Nathan Hendricks, Chief Creative officer at LPK, will assert that design has actively dismissed a critical consideration - one that contemporary research has consistently found to have a positive impact on the human condition. The consideration? Beauty.
