Vol. 30, No. 1

Drafts and Ads Due December 15, 2018

Publication date March 2019

Education can be a powerful force in driving the way we experience life and solve our biggest problems. Of course, education doesn’t just happen in schools, although many of us first encountered design in college or even earlier. Some of us learn about design and innovation in other contexts, from the corporate workplace to life in startup companies in emerging and developing markets to nonprofits and government agencies, all the way down to tinkering in the garage to realize a dream of a product or service that’s available nowhere else. The goal for all of us is to use the design mindset of questioning, observing, experimenting, networking across boundaries, and finding connections where no one else sees them. It’s about creating friction and fighting orthodoxy and the status quo. It’s about stretching ourselves. If designers don’t do this, who will?
