Thor Heyerdahl: the Innovator

Thor Heyerdahl (1914–2002) is one of history’s most famous explorers. In 1947 he crossed the Pacific Ocean on the balsawood raft Kon-Tiki. In Norway, Thor Heyerdahl was the explorer who never gave up, who did what he believed even though ‘everyone’ said it was impossible.
Thor Heyerdahl Jr. joined his father on later expeditions. He will share stories about his father, their travels, and his own sustainability work and how he continues his father’s inspirational optimism.

Untangling Complexities in Healthcare: Redesigning Breast Cancer Diagnostics

At Oslo University Hospital, it could take up to three months before a woman who discovered a lump in her breast was scheduled an appointment for examination. Andreas Moan and Marie Hartmann will share how the hospital used design methods to drastically rethink the entire referral and diagnostic process. The result was a 90% reduction in waiting time from a patient's first visit with her primary doctor through her final diagnosis at the hospital.

This interactive co-keynote session focuses on music industry that, like many other fields of creative content and entertainment, is undergoing major transformations and interruptions in terms of business logics and customer experience. Many bands, artists, festivals and events, as well as other products of different types, seem to be able to navigate the stormy waters and stay relevant and innovative thanks to strong brand stories, generating authentic fan experiences, and continuous creative outputs. This session consists of two viewpoints: Tom Morgan will present the design effectiveness of their strategic rebrand for the acclaimed Bergen International Festival, the most internationally awarded rebrand in 2014, and Toni-Matti Karjalainen will share selected cases from effective heavy metal and rock music b(r)ands.The brief presentations will be followed by a discussion and Q&A session.

In 2015 the world came to agreement on a set of 17 goals, for the entire planet — the SDGs. But where are the designers? To build the world envisioned by the 17 goals, design will have to be at the heart of the work. 


Out of this insight was born the Oslo Manifesto, which calls on designers to think boldly about the SDGs and use them for guidance and creative inspiration. But it is also a global initiative, reaching out to designers of all kinds, so that they can play their role as an essential part of this positive, global transformation.
