Wherever you are based, we’re sure there are design & business professionals interested in connecting and learning more about today’s topics.



What is a dmi:NightOut?

Membership benefits of DMI and exposure to you/ your Brand. At the outset of the event, there should be a brief description of DMI (and benefits of membership in DMI). If possible, a DMI Board member or DMI Advisor should be present to perform this introduction to DMI. The DMI President can provide a recommendation of who might be available/ best suited.

  • dmi:NightOut can also be an evening of conversation around a select theme. Examples are:
    1. The Value of Design
    2. Design & Purpose: Social Innovation
    3. Design in Science & Technology
    4. Design Entrepreneurship
    5. futurED: Redesigning Education
    6. Career Development in Design / Innovation Management
  • The Host may include a brief guest speaker presentation, no more than 15-30 minutes is recommended.
    It can be a solo speaker or a small moderated panel. Most of the time should be for social networking.
  • Past event locations, photos, and video can be found at the DMI website.
  • Shared insights and content with our global community on the DMI website.


Why Host a dmi:NightOut?

Hosting provides invaluable opportunities:
  • Share your Brand; organization, team, talents with the community.
  • Share info about DMI and the experience with potential new members.
  • Be recognized as a Host of DMI NIGHTOUT on the DMI website
  • Craft, curate content that inspires further conversation within our global audience.
  • Provide a local source of support and partnership for the critical issues facing today's design leaders.
  • Foster community, collaboration and content that informs and inspires.

What is Expected of YOU as a Host of a dmi:NightOut?

  • Notify DMI at least 4 months in advance of the planned date.
  • Provide the name(s) of proposed speaker(s) to DMI
  • Promote the event to your global network and regional community via your own mailing lists, website,
    twitter, Facebook, etc.
  • Provide refreshments of your choice, and at your own cost.
  • You may consider securing a sponsor if you need help offsetting the costs and/or work involved.
  • DMI must pre-approve of the sponsor selected, to ensure alignment with the DMI Brand.
  • DMI charges a small event fee (~$20pp) to defray our costs.
  • After the NightOut report findings to DMI through writing, photos, visual mapping, video, etc.
    to share with the DMI community. Feel free to enlist your colleagues and local students to
    help facilitate the evening and content.


What Support is Provided by DMI?

  • Assistance with Agenda/ content development for the evening.
  • Help promote your Night Out on our website, in email and on social platforms (starts 3-4 months in advance). 
  • Registration management
  • Limited amount of free marketing collateral for potential new DMI members. Large amounts will require
    a fee paid to DMI
  • Post-NightOut content curation on the DMI website (as appropriate).


Who Attends a dmi:NightOut?

  • Design/ innovation leaders in your community who may or may not be current
    DMI members. This is a great opportunity to encourage many to join or re-engage with DMI,
    if they have not attended DMI events in a awhile!
  • Wherever you are based, we’re sure there are design & business professionals interested in connecting
    and learning more about today’s DMI topics.
  • Night Out can attract 10 - 50+ people, depending the venue. Success is measured in the quality of
    the conversations!


Where Does a dmi:NightOut Happen?

The location is up to you: at your studio, a bar, a gallery, open space, etc.
  • You may also consider collaborating with another co-host to share the space. 
  • Past cities include: London, Sydney, Toronto, New York, Sao Paolo, Shanghai, and more.


How Can I Begin the Planning to Host a dmi:NightOut?

  • Contact DMI Staff
  • Be ready to commit to a proposed date, per our schedule. (4 months in advance of the proposed date)
  • Coordinate a venue and time (after-work, early evening events are preferred). 
  • Provide an agenda of your vision of your dmi:NightOut. Agendas ideas include:
    • An evening networking reception at your studio or another locale.
    • A Panel discussion on a topical theme
    • A visiting speaker, author, professional for a brief presentation and Q&A, film screening,
      activity, etc.
