Now we live with constant change, design is entering a new era with unprecedented relevance. Design is ultimately about helping deliver better outcomes.

We are living in a time of tremendous change. A revolution in fact. Social, economic, cultural and technological change is all around us, its rate accelerating, its effects ever more profound. Design is increasingly playing a major role in shaping and delivering these changes from the products and services we use everyday to the way government and organisations work. We are in every sense, in a new era for design.

For designers this new relevance is not necessarily a surprise. After all Design is at its core about creating and delivering better outcomes. This new significance comes with huge opportunities and responsibility as we also live with the onset of profound global challenges including climate change, ageing population and economic turbulence. The mindset, approach and attitude of design will be key in addressing these issues and other important questions. For instance what kind of changes do we want to make? What kind of future do we want to create? How should we best utilise technology and what are the consequences.

One development in the changing nature of change itself that stands out for me is that innovation is no longer the domain of big business. Anyone can play, and they are. As a result the physics of entire business sectors are being turned upside down by innovative startups. And we're only just getting started.

I'm very excited to be a part of this DMI conference. We have curated a programme around these themes and the idea of change emerging from everywhere and being increasingly accessible and participatory. There will be perspective not only from large corporates and cultural thought leaders but also from grass roots entrepreneurs who are making change and educational leaders who are shaping the designers of tomorrow.
