dmi:Workshop "Jumpstart Your Career***

Dr. Denise Sawyer-Johnson, Leadership Development Prof & Empowerment Coach
David Parsons, Director Experience Design Group, Xerox

During these challenging times, it's important to recalibrate our career plans and refocus on our personal values, interests, and strengths, and demonstrate our value to our organizations. Being resilient and flexible to address demands and explore various career options and opportunities can ensure we manage career challenges and facilitate continuous learning.

This Workshop will include an overview of the 4 steps typically taken in the career planning process; and then will focus in depth on Step 1 / Know Yourself - the most important part of the process. These are the hi-level topics covered in Step 1. You will have a chance to ask Questions and both Denise and Dave will offer their insights and feedback.

  • Take stock of your career
  • Identify your values, interests, and strengths
  • Examine key factors driving your career decisions
  • Establish & cultivate your Brand
  • Assess the value you add in your organization
  • Take Charge of the next steps: Career Planning

Registered attendees will receive a guide booklet to follow along in the session. It will contain exercises and resources to guide your career development and move you closer to your goals. Following the session, each participant will be positioned to move to the next steps in the career planning process. These steps can be conducted on your own, or with the help of a career expert or professional coach.

*** A minimum of 5 participants will be required in order to hold this session.

Rama Gheerawo, Director, Helen Hamlyn Centre for Design, Royal College of Art, London
Dr. Chris McGinley, Senior Research Fellow, Royal College of Art, London

Inclusive Design is increasingly being used as a business tool for customer and user engagement. It is about engaging the widest number of people. This workshop will take you through the process of design in a few hours.

In today’s competitive market, it is important to understand the context in which you are operating. User perspective is increasingly important and successful innovators create something that meets their needs and aspiration. This workshop will show you how to engage with potential customers, introducing the concept of ‘lead users’. It will help you ensure that your ideas have relevance to the real world.

By completing this module you will have a basis for conducting research with people and a way of taking this forward. This module will give an introduction to the tools and techniques of people-centred innovation. All processes that will be taught aim to increase your innovation potential. This is not just a course for designers but is for anyone looking to enhance their creativity potential.

Chris and Rama have a track record of dealing with over 1o0 international organisations, communicating a design approach to business people, designers, researchers academics, policy makers and civil servants at various levels in an organisation. Companies have included: Heathrow, Panasonic, British Heart Foundation, Dyson, Ford, GlaxoSmithKline, Megaman, the NHS, Samsung, Sony, TATA Consulting Services, Toyota, Transport for London and Unilever.

You will go through the four stages of Inclusive Design, combining lectures with practical experiences. You will work in teams and experience individual upscaling in a people centered approach, that you can apply to your business the very next day.
