I think there’s an opportunity and responsibility for designers to play a larger role in economic development and leadership. I call it moving from lowercase design, to capital D Design, to dollar sign De$ign. It’s going to be important for design to take a larger role in the technology economy.

Design has become a game changer in Silicon Valley. Last year, John Maeda joined KPCB as the firm’s first Design Partner, joining from his role as the President of the Rhode Island School of Design. Now, in his inaugural #DesignInTech Report, Maeda highlights the rising importance of design in the entrepreneurial ecosystem. Drawing on extensive research and his own conversations with hundreds of designers, Maeda examines the intersection of design, business, and technology. The report covers trends ranging from the record amounts of funding flowing into design-led startups to M&A activity with major tech corporations. Beyond designers and technologists, the report will appeal to a broad audience. For all of us who use a computer or mobile device, great design is changing how we live and work. This report helps explain why.

Graphic designer, computer scientist, academic, and author John Maeda’s work in design, technology and leadership explores the intersection of these fields. He was the President of the Rhode Island School of Design from 2008 to 2013 and continues to be influential in the movement to transform STEM education (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) to STEAM by adding Art. He is currently a Design Partner at the venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers where he supports early to late stage startups with the transformative opportunity presented by design.

As an artist, Maeda’s early work redefined the use of electronic media as a tool for expression by combining computer programming with traditional artistic technique, laying the groundwork for interactive motion graphics. Author of several books, his best selling book to date, Laws of Simplicity, addresses ways for people to simplify their life in the face of growing complexity.
