If you have any concerns or need additional accommodation, please reach out. Let’s rally together and make this Summer’s ADMC a meaningful week of research, networking, and exchange with each other.

The future presents new challenges and opportunities for design.  Those who manage design must equip themselves to confront rapid change on all fronts – economic, environmental, and social. Research and practice must increasingly collaborate to keep pace with the needs of today and the future.
ADMC20 will explore how design adds value to innovation, competitiveness, and social good. The latest design research and partnerships will be presented to help light a path towards impacting the future by design.

Keynote Speakers

Karel Vredenburg

Director, Global Academic Programs, IBM Design

Future of Design Education: Closing the Gap

Design education is often out of alignment with the needs of today's world. Seven years ago when IBM rebooted their design program and started hiring 2,500 designers, a three-month ‘bootcamp’ was created for new hires. Dubbed the 'missing semester,’ it was designed to close gaps in education and ready employees for the world of work. IBM also developed product team and executive education. Since then, IBM has collaborated with top schools across the globe to create a more aligned approach. This session with Karel Vredenburg, who has led Design worldwide at IBM for most of his three decades with the company, will outline the experience, describe the challenges, and discuss progress IBM has made in ‘closing the gap.’
In addition to his keynote, Vredenburg, his colleagues from IBM, and Iain Aitchison, Director at Graft Design and Innovation Management will facilitate an interactive session "dmi:FuturEd: The Future of Design Education” to close day 2 of the conference.

Daniel Rosenberg

HCI Professor, San Jose State Univ., author, inventor & Chief Design Officer

UX MAGIC, The Power of Semantic Interaction Design

UX quality will make or break the success of any digital product or service. In the past the UX design discipline relied heavily on guesswork, intuition and endless rounds of A/B trial and error testing. Semantic IxD introduces a proven, powerful and cognitive science-based approach for generative digital design work that improves both the quality of initial designs as well as the speed at which they can be delivered by a factor of 10X. This innovative new approach addresses the weakest link in the user centered design lifecycle, the point where features and user requirements metamorphize into sketches, flows and other tangible design artifacts. UX MAGIC is a new book by this keynote speaker where he will introduce the Semantic IxD method to the DMI community.
Daniel is a prominent UX designer, author and educator who invented many of the GUI design patterns used today. In 2019 he received the prestigious ACM SigCHI Lifetime Practice award for his numerous technical and leadership contributions to the field.

R+B: Design Research + Design Business Presentations

Partnerships between academia, industry and government are the new normal. Collaboration and knowledge-sharing can change the course of companies, industries, economies and governments. At the ADMC, nine 1-hour Research + Business (R+B) presentations will highlight collaborations between educators, and both the private and public sectors.

Presentations include a new framework for evaluating the innovation strength of organizations, building creative capacity in SMEs, and more. Submit your collaboration.

The dmi:FuturED Project

New market dynamics are blurring the lines between industry disciplines demanding that designers acquire new or additional skills. At the same time, design education is being upended by challenges to traditional approaches, and by calls for new methodologies. A better understanding of changing dynamics in global design education is needed. To provide much-needed insights into what students, educators, and industry needs - DMI has launched the FutureEd Survey, a global survey of 4 aspects of future design education:

  • Critical design skills
  • Optimal teaching tools
  • Educational environments
  • Learning methodologies

dmi:Student Essay Competition

Please alert and encourage your students to the dmi:Student Essay Competition. Winners receive a pass to attend the Boston, dmi:Design Leadership Conference. This can be a career-changing experience for them. The deadline July 9th. Click here for for more information and to submit.

About the Conference

As one of DMI's longest running events, DMI's Biennial Academic Design Management Research Conferece creates an inclusive conversation amoung academics and practicioners from a varity of disciplines to examine the ways in which design management can inform innovation currently and in the future. We aim to lay the groundwork to advance the state of the art in design management research, theory, and practice, and produce a significant contribution to the field through the paper presentations, conference proceedings and through producing a special issue of the dmi:Journal.

Research Papers

All papers submitted are peer-reviewed in a double-blind process and considered for publication in the dmi:Journal, a globally recognized journal of Design Management. We welcome any research approach or type of paper including conceptual, empirical and critical literature reviews. However, we expect high standards of scholarship within the papers in terms of establishing the theoretical context, explicating the methods of inquiry, and reporting results that may aid other researchers.

Proceedings from the conference will be submitted to scholarly databases for indexing and published digitally on the DMI website (
