Cultivating Healthy Lifestyles in Singapore

Idean - Idean for Capgemini Group, SportsSG

In 2018, research by the World Health Organization (WHO) found that one in three Singaporeans were not physically active enough, reporting less than 150 minutes of moderate activity or less than 75 minutes of vigorous activity per week. To encourage Singaporeans to improve their health and well-being, Sports Singapore (SportsSG), the national statutory board for sports, launched ActiveHealth—a social movement to empower Singaporeans to be healthy.

As part of the initiative, the ActiveHealth mobile app was built for users to log body composition and other health data obtained in the ActiveHealth Lab. To rapidly increase the adoption rate among Singaporeans, SportsSG was faced with the challenge of encouraging its use by the “sink population,” the bulk of Singapore’s working population consisting of individuals from 24–60 years old whose physical activity is reduced during their working years. To re-ignite their health and fitness journeys, SportsSG engaged Idean—a global leader in consulting, digital transformation, technology, and engineering services—to explore the future vision of the ActiveHealth app and its value proposition to Singapore’s sink population.

Applying design thinking with empathy was at the heart of the design. In-depth interviews were conducted with a variety of users — new and existing ActiveHealth users, fitness enthusiasts, and those nascent in their fitness journeys. Insights showed that users wanted a product beyond a fitness tracker. Users desired a smart, social health and fitness ecosystem app with a built-in coach, and one with personalized fitness programs that leveraged on the typical Singaporean’s use of Sports Singapore facilities and ActiveHealth Labs.

Based on the SportsSG’s goal of ensuring users are active throughout the day, the team worked with SportsSG’s sports scientists to design a unique fitness programming and advisory app built around signature moments that drive a user’s motivation and sustain an active lifestyle to ensure consistency. Specifically, beyond tracking physical activity, ActiveHealth automatically recommends healthy habits and activities at various times throughout the day and provides reminders to schedule appointments at an ActiveHealth Lab for a fitness checkup based on its recommended fitness program. The organization is forging ahead to refine and design its programs for all fitness levels to help users build a sustainable and healthy lifestyle.

A healthy and active lifestyle promotes an individual’s happiness and well-being. By empowering Singaporeans to cultivate their health and fitness through the ActiveHealth app, it plays a significant role in the nation’s movement to help Singaporeans lead healthy and active lifestyles. Having a healthy population also brings about economic benefits to Singapore, as healthy populations live longer, are more productive, and have lower medical costs. The new ActiveHealth App will provide Singaporeans greater access to free fitness programs, ActiveHealth Lab, and sports scientists’ expertise through technology. In doing so, a new level of health and fitness culture is ignited in the nation.
