Segal Design Institute at Northwestern University + Feeding America

Over 41 million Americans are food insecure. At the same time, a full 31 percent of the food supply, $162 billion worth of food, is wasted annually in restaurants, grocery, and convenience stores. Feeding America, the 3rd largest non-profit in the US, facilitates food rescue programs that safely source food from retail donations and partners with an informal network of food depositories and local agencies to distribute the food to millions of people in need. But there are identified gaps in the distribution chain.

Limited agency service hours plus mobility and transportation challenges restrict some users from accessing rescued food. 4.9 million are seniors. To solve the issue, a collaborative team from Feeding America and the Segal Design Institute at Northwestern University partnered to design a model of food rescue and delivery that is independent of agency intervention. NeighbourFood consists of a network of individuals whom themselves are experiencing food insecurity who deliver food to people with limited mobility. Feeding America collects rescued food, its sorted into bags, and the NeighbourFood network delivers it to recipients with limited access. The entire system is designed to run on SMS communication. By utilizing volunteers, the program reduces transportation costs and expands service hours - increasing the number of individuals that can be served. Key to the system are micro-communities that take into account the emotional components of each of the stakeholders, helping develop feelings of belonging and trust.

FeedingAmerica and the Segal Design Institute at Northwestern University have created a program that expands access to rescued food for millions of people in a way that builds dignity, trust and strengthens the community.
