Typical residential sprinkler systems waste up to 50% of the water consumed. The founders of a Colorado startup called Rachio have begun to change that. In 2013, they launched a WiFi-enabled system that gives homeowners control of watering via a smartphone app and uses real-time local weather data to eliminate watering in the rain. As their product gained #1 market share, the founders realized they needed a redesign if they wanted to scale-up and head off potential competitors.

They approached the design and innovation firm Bresslergroup to create a Generation 2 version with technical upgrades, and a lower price point, that’s easier manufacture, install, and use. Bresslergroup assembled a project team combining industrial design, mechanical and electrical engineering expertise to meet all the client’s criteria and more.

  • The second-generation controller uses half as many parts as the original.
  • Easier manufacture and assembly allows Rachio to keep production in the U.S.
  • New sensors collect more accurate data on weather and water use helping to reduce runoff of fertilizers and other chemicals.
  • An improved visual display gives more detailed information and control.
  • And, important to staying ahead of competitors, the new module connects with other IoT devices and is the first-ever smart sprinkler integration with Amazon Echo and Google Home allowing voice activated use.
  • Since it’s launch in 2013, the system has
saved 4.5 billion gallons of water (and counting).
  • Rachio is starting to amplify their environmental impact by working with water utilities.

Bresslergroup went beyond the original specifications to produce a Gen2 model that brings value to the entire product ecosystem from the manufacturer, installer, and consumer to the utility. Rachio works to help consumers save on their monthly water bill and conserve the planet's most crucial resource.
