ETiCCS Cervical Cancer Screening System

SAP Design & Co-Innovation Center

Globally, cervical cancer is the second most common cause of death for women, but in Kenya it ranks #1. Although it is easily preventable, most eligible women have never been screened.

SAP’s Design & Co-Innovation Center joined the Heidelberg University Hospital to launch a new healthcare screening test, and a process to digitize the resulting data. The one-year study called Emerging Technologies in Cervical Cancer Screening (ETiCCS) tested 800 women at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret, Kenya.

In the discovery phase, SAP interviewed stakeholders:

  • Patients, living in rural areas.
  • Lab Technicians who analyze screening samples.
  • Local doctors who provide medical services.
  • Local nurses who maintain the closest connection to the patients, providing many of the services health centers offer.
  • Local recruiters who disseminate information about cervical cancer.
  • Researchers at the Heidelberg University Hospital in Germany.

Based on the extensive user research with the identified stakeholders, a single process across multiple roles was established. The user-centered solution:

  • Enables seamless communication between all parties, even in very remote areas.
  • Makes data entry simple so access to patient data is immediately available.
  • Makes test results readily available to the Heidelberg University Hospital.

The design ensured that nurses, in particular, who manage 50 to 100 patients per day, would find the screen interaction simple. Engineers ensured the tablet functioned in an environment with unstable Internet connectivity.

ETiCCS supports the fight against cancer in underprivileged areas and sets new standards for bringing applied medical research to Africa.
