As the longest standing global institution of it’s kind, DMI holds an exclusive position in the Design practice and Design Management landscape. 

The Design Management Institute is an international organization that connects design to business, society and the changing world. For 40 years, DMI has been an active advocate for the strategic value of design.  The organization sponsors research, publishes academic papers, hosts articles by practitioners, and connects members across disciplines and across the globe to debate issues and share best practices.  

DMI is proud to announce the inaugural Design Value Awards. The Awards will honor the contributions of teams who have delivered significant value through design or design management practices. The value can be expressed as positive financial, cultural, customer, or social impact.  Global organizations of any size will be considered, as each have their own unique set of challenges. Awards are open to consultants, government agencies, non-profit organizations, educators and corporations of any size.

There will be 4 categories of awardees: 1st prize, 2nd prize, 3rd prize, Honorable Mention. There will be a maximum of 3 awards per levels 1st - 3rd, and up to 2 Honorable Mentions*. Winners will be recognized at the dmi: 40th Anniversary Gala.

Late Deadline for Submissions: August 7th 11:59pm EDT (Late Fee Applies)


Winners will be Notified: by August 21st 12:00pm EDT




The dmi: Design Value Awards recognize the value that excellence in design and/or design management add in all facets of an organization.  Therefore, the Awards are open to teams of any size and all disciplines.

  • Awards are NOT divided by organization size. Global organizations of any size will be considered.
  • Awards are open to consultants, government agencies, non-profit organizations, educators and corporations.
  • Individuals or teams may apply.
  • Any organization in which a jury member works may not submit an application.
  • Organizations with multiple offices in different countries may submit applications from any country.
  • Companies with multiple divisions may submit applications from any division.


The Awards Application is simple:

  1. Pay Submission fee
  2. Answer a one-page questionnaire
  3. Submit a simple poster
  4. Provide 2-4 references


Submission Fee

Payment is submitted online on the website.
The following fees apply until July 31st 11:59PM:

  • DMI Members: $350USD
  • Non-Members: $475USD

 Late Fee for Submissions AFTER July 31st 12:00am EDT add $200USD:


    • DMI Members: $550USD
    • Non-Members: $675USD

    Application Questionnaire

    • The Application Questionnaire is in English and should take approximately 30 minutes to complete.
    • It contains 6 sections:
      1. Applicant Data: e.g., name, title
      2. Company data: e.g., company size, industry, where design resides in your organization
      3. Design Objective: e.g., design strategy, process
      4. Assessment of Value Delivered: the value of the positive impact of design in any or all four areas: financial, social, customer satisfaction, and culture
      5. Poster submission: a visualization of your design objective, strategy and value assessment (poster upload specifications are provided below)
      6. References: 2-4 references who can validate the work.
    • The questions are in both multiple choice and short sentence form



    Your poster is a graphic visualization of the information given in your questionnaire. Please use both images (e.g. graphs, charts, process flow, product or service photos) and limited text. Winners will have their posters displayed at the dmi: 40th Anniversary Gala, and printed or digitally rendered in DMI publications.

    • At the end of the Application Questionnaire, you will upload a poster as a PDF file. File size should be no larger than 25MB.
    • The poster may be any size HOWEVER
      • Poster should be in a vertical (portrait) orientation
      • Poster aspect ratio should be 4:9
    • Poster PDF filename must include applicant's name
    • You may bookmark the URL for your application page, return to it, and submit the questionnaire and poster separately- as long as both are complete by the submission deadline that you paid for (July 31st Regular Submission - August 7th Late Submission)



    You will be asked to provide 2-4 references that can verify the details of your questionnaire.

    Publishing and Usage Rights

    By submitting your application to DMI indicates that you have read this and agree that all materials submitted to the 2015 DMI Design Value Awards program become the property of DMI. DMI retains the right to utilize all Award entry material for any DMI future publication (includes winners and non-winners).

    Keep a copy of all entry materials for your records. Note that awards selections are left up to the judges’ and DMI's final discretion. An award may or may not be granted in each category.

    * DMI and its judges reserve the right not to award if criteria and quality are not met.
