Embracing Design in a Startup Culture
General Manager, Home & Kitchen, Quirky
Successfully launching new business models often requires a challenge to traditionally accepted practices for organizing and operating a business. Design thinking allows for a considered disruption of these norms in favor of nimbler, frictionless workflows that allocate resources thoughtfully. Matt Baer, General Manager of Home and Kitchen at Quirky, will describe his approach to organizational design for two fast-moving startups, the importance of accepting failure, and creating flexibility to react to rapid growth and setbacks in real time.
Matt Baer is General Manager of Home and Kitchen at Quirky, overseeing product development and business functions, from invention evaluation through product design, production, distribution and sale.
Prior to joining Quirky, Matt was one of the first employees in pioneering design e-commerce company Fab.com. He designed the organizational structure and workflow that drove the company to a $1B valuation in less than two years.
At Fab, Matt was also General Manager of the wholly owned subsidiary Designed By You—a first-to-market vertically integrated online custom furniture business.
Matt is a graduate of the University of Michigan Stephen M. Ross School of Business and Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law and was a founding member of NYCxDESIGN, New York City’s official celebration of design.
