2016 DMI Conferences








Design Research Meets Design Practice at the Inflection Point:

Inflection Point: "An event that results in a significant change.
A turning point after which a dramatic change is expected to result.”


Partnerships between academia, industry and government are becoming the new normal; collaboration and knowledge-transfer are creating inflection points capable of changing the course of companies, industries, economies and governments.

DMI has long been a global advocate for the collaboration between researchers and practitioners in design and design management. The 2016 dmi:Academic Design Management Conference (ADMC16) will facilitate a diverse, rich, and provocative dialog between academic researchers and design practitioners; the goal being to surface opportunities for new connection, combination, cooperation and collision.



Call For Papers

The call for papers is now closed. DMI received more than 225 abstracts for research papers in design and design management. Over 450 authors and co-authors are represented. Abstracts were submitted by academics from 33 countries.


1. Business: Design and Design Management for Economic Growth

New reports link design to economic value, sector agility, and innovation. This track looks for theoretically-driven and practice-relevant research that illustrates new tools, processes, organization structures, and platforms by which goods and services are are created and managed, and the metrics by which success is measured.

In this track we hope to identify:
- Collaborations between researchers and design leaders/practitioners; or work between research, public sector and private sector partners that drive economic value.
- Research illustrating new forms of economic value generated by design and design management.
- Differences in the strategies and approaches that organizations apply in their product design and management, that may be successful if implemented in unrelated fields/industries.

2. Society: Design and Design Management for Social Innovation

This track explores three facets of design for human welfare: sustainable design, design in health/wellness, and issues of design in justice. The sustainable design track seeks to understand the potential influence and economic impact of implementing of adopting sustainable resource management practices. The health and wellness track addresses the topics of active aging, behavioral change, and the shifting attitudes around well-being. The justice track explores the role of design in all facets of human justice: age, racial, economic, gender, and criminal justice.

Examples of contributions to this track might include:
- The impact of sustainable practices in energy, water, transport, or waste reduction.
- Tools, approaches or frameworks for incorporating sustainable practices within business models.
- Practice-based case studies of the value of sustainable design.
- How can design engage in the dialog on integrated health and wellness?
- What role can design play in health outcomes?
- How does design address human equity for those who experience a built environment or service?
- How can design be used to address issues confronting less advantaged groups within our local communities, states, regions or world?

3. The Changing World: Design and Design Management in the Public Sector

In this track we wish to open the debate on the role that design can play in creating resonant public projects and resilient communities. Questions include how can design jump-start local prosperity without harming community cohesion? How can design enable meaningful dialogue among users and stakeholders to create more relevant public services? If resilience is future-proofing—how can design ensure that services, communities, and public projects thrive, on their own terms, in context to place.


We call for papers around such topics as:
- What role can design play in strengthening communities?
- What value can public sector / private industry /academic based partnerships deliver?
- Can existing strategies and business models ensure the success of a project in the public arena?
- How can results be measured in these types of projects: what metrics and KPIs can be applied?

4. Design, Leadership, and Organization Design

This track explores the intersection of design and organization development. We seek to explore the impact that design can have on the way that an organization understands itself, and creates processes and systems to support it’s endeavors. How can design facilitate the transition in process management at all levels? How can design support changing mind-sets to support strategic change?Innovation is a key driver of competitiveness and economic growth, and cross-disciplinary collaboration is key to successful innovation. Yet businesses often run into challenges managing governance, communication and coordination at different stages of the collaboration process. How can design support meaningful dialogue among all users and stakeholders?

As an example, contributions within this track may address:
- Cross-functional and cross-disciplinary collaboration of designers with other functions, disciplines and external stakeholders.
- Organization structures or process implementation that impacts collaboration.
- How design addresses the complexity of strategic change.
- The management of strategic design assets across business structures.
- Online, remote, and virtual collaborations across a dispersed team.
- Evaluating performance using cross-functional metrics and measures.

Paper Submission Guidelines

Notification to authors of accepted abstracts is out. If accepted to submit a paper for the conference please view and adhere to the paper submission guidelines.



Full Papers

All papers will be double-blind peer-reviewed.


Full papers should be between 4000–6000 words in length. We welcome any research approach or type of paper including conceptual, empirical and critical literature reviews. However, we expect high standards of scholarship within the papers in terms of establishing the theoretical context, explicating the methods of inquiry, and reporting results that may aid other researchers.



Conference Presentations

At least one author/presenter of accepted papers must attend the conference and present their work.




Proceedings from the conference will be published digitally on the DMI website.
