Digging Deeper into “Good Design”

By Andrew Hoffman, Consultant

Andrew Hoffman Andrew Hoffman

Editor’s note: The article by Michael McPherson on Redefining ‘Good Design is Good Business’ in the September issue of the eBulletin sparked a good deal of response. Here’s a follow up from one reader.

The final five words of IBM CEO and Chairman Tom Watson’s famed 1975 speech—“good design is good business”—should be the mantra of every smart designer who is paid for his or her work!

What is most important about these words is that the talk was given at the Wharton School of Business by the man who drove his company from revenues of $892 million in 1956 to $8.3 billion when he retired in 1971. The speech opened with the words, “I eventually came to see design become one of the major reasons for the success of IBM.” Watson was talking about making money for himself, his company, and his shareholders, and he recognized design as a strategy to achieve that goal.

Watson believed that good industrial design “must primarily serve people.” Master architect Le Corbusier said good design “is intelligence made visible.” We could discuss what constitutes “good design,” but I suggest that the real issue for designers today and for the survival of good design has more to do with an understanding of the other side of the equation—good business.

Managing Design for Strategic Advantage
November 6-7, 2003, New York City, USA
February 3-4, 2004, London, UK
Taught by Peter L. Phillips, Design Strategy Consultant

Traditionally, design has been viewed as a service within an organization—not as a strategic business resource. But this traditional view of design is rapidly changing in the fast-moving, highly-competitive business arena of the new millennium. Design managers and designers now need to rethink both the processes of managing design and the ways in which they communicate the strategic value of design to the success of the enterprise. More information.

“Just what I've been looking for—an articulate and cogent event. It's a while since I've felt re-energized in this way.”
—Brendan Hamley, Head Designer for Electronic Channels, Nationwide Building Society (UK)

When Successful Products Prevent Strategic Innovation
By Peter Jones, PhD
Design Management Journal, Spring 2002, Vol. 13, No. 2

As startups become large mainstream corporations, many lose the intense “breakthrough” mentality that characterizes their initial achievements. The willingness to take risks is replaced by a focus on growth and market share. Rather than moving on to the next threshold, satisfying customers becomes the priority. Peter Jones exmines this fascinating shift in values and evaluates strategies designed to maintain a company's innovative spirit.
