Brand
Attraction and Emotional Design: Uncovering the Brand Attributes that
Consumers Crave
DMI
Design Leadership Series—Sponsored
by Microsoft
Tuesday, November 14, 2006, 1pm EST
With Henry Chin, Executive Director, Ziba Design (New Speaker)
In a world of choice,
few product lines—let alone brands—stand apart. Why? And how
can we apply the fundamental rationale behind core human desires to better
understand what it takes to move beyond merely fulfilling functional needs,
to create emotional attachments to products and brand? Creating value-based
connections through the identification and design of meaningful experiences
is the foundation of Emotional Design. Every company has an essential
core, and every company has a strategic customer that it seeks to attract.
Henry Chin, Executive
Director of Ziba, explores these critical factors for success through
examples of companies who are masters of the craft. Derived from an understanding
of the history of human culture and psychology, Ziba Design has a long
history of working to uncover the behavior, motivations, and values that
drive consumer choices. It is the journey that moves us from simply fulfilling
the functional expectations of the consumer to connecting at an emotional
level that drives brand loyalty.

International
Conference on Strategic Innovation and Creativity in Brand & Design
Management
Seoul,
Korea
November 29, 2006
Co-Sponsored by:
Design and Brand Management Society
Institute for Industrial Policy Studies—Brand Management Institute
In 2004,
DMI joined forces with two international design organizations to sponsor
a major academic conference in Seoul, Korea. This fall, DMI will build
on this success with another important academic conference in Korea, once
again cosponsored by the Design and Brand Management Society (DBMS), and
the Institute for Industrial Policy Studies—Brand Management Institute
(IPS-BMI). These international organizations are working together to promote
a single mission of raising the awareness of the importance of brand and
design management within corporations.
The call for papers
for the conference has resulted in the acceptance of an impressive collection
of 41 papers, representing 61 authors from 13 countries. The program will
include five key program tracks: brand strategy, case studies, two research
studies tracks, the Korea Brand Award, as well as poster sessions. This
collection of thinking from top educators lays the groundwork for a lively
forum for exchange of ideas and best practices among participants from
around the world.
Interested individuals
from the business world, academia, and government and public agencies
are invited to participate. For more information, please visit www.dmi.org for program, registration, schedule,
and hotel information.

Stories:
The Way We Inspire Ourselves and Each Other
By Eun-Kyong Baek,
Lecturer, Design Management and Innovation, DeMontfort University, UK
From the Design Management Review, Vol. 17, No. 3, Summer 2006
Managers need to take
advantage of narrative thinking—the engaging art of storytelling—as
an important source of creative ideas. Elaborating on this thesis, Eun-Kyong
Baek demonstrates how sharing stories can be the catalyst for innovation,
revealing new design pathways and triggering specific strategies related
to such areas as branding, product development, and advertising.

and ever-improving, it’s a true honor to receive such recognition,
and a real delight to receive it in conjunction with my good friends at
Philips Design. This has been an amazing year for Teague, celebrating
80 remarkable years of culture-defining design; we are inspired by our
rich heritage, and use it to inform our future focused point of view.”
Philips Design’s
CEO, Stefano Marzano, commented, “Philips Design is honored and
privileged to receive this recognition. We are dedicated to furthering
the cause of design in creating an attractive and sustainable quality
of life, and passionate about developing and establishing design as a

After the presentation
of the award, surprise speaker Bob Blaich FIDSA, of Blaich Associates,

and successful career as head of design at Herman Miller and Philips.
