The Business of Measuring Design and Design Management
October
22-25, Equinox Resort & Spa
Manchester Village, Vermont, USA
Today, businesses
need to be assured that they are capturing real value for their investment
in design. Business managers, design managers, and designers are asked
more and more to provide measurements of the effectiveness and the efficiency
of design and design management. How is this done? What is the criteria
for evaluation? What are the key variables to look into? How does one
isolate design? Until now, there have been few consolidated efforts to
capture data about this very important aspect of every business. The 31st
International Design Management Conference will be dedicated
to exploring and defining this elusive and yet most important topic.
For 2006, this conference
is moving to a
new venue: The Equinox Resort & Spa, in Manchester Village,
Vermont. Founded in 1769, the historic Equinox features New England charm
and amenities such as a spa, indoor pool, fitness center, 18-hole golf
course, and a wide range of activities such as off road driving, falconry,
mountain biking, and fly fishing.
Registration
is now open for DMI members only during the month of May. Nonmember
registration will open in early June. Early registration is recommended
for this prestigious conference, which often fills up well in advance.

Meaningful Brand Experiences Disrupt Your Market?
By Dave Norton, Principal,
Lead Strategist, Stone
Mantel
From the Design Management Review, Vol. 16, No. 4, Fall 2005
Industries as diverse
as household products and travel destinations are undergoing dramatic
change. Referencing fascinating examples, Dave Norton demonstrates how
this shift is caused by “disruptive innovation” and driven
by the market’s quest for meaningful experiential encounters. The
impact is to transform businesses as well as the design of the goods,
services, and experiences associated with them.
