Design Leadership in Action:
Measuring
and Building Design’s Role in Achieving Business Success
The 31st International Design Management
Conference
October
22-25, Equinox Resort & Spa
Manchester Village, Vermont, USA
Conference
Co-chairs:
Tom Lockwood, PhD, President, DMI
Lee D. Green, Worldwide
VP, Brand and Values Experience, IBM
Businesses
need to capture real value from their investments in design. Therefore
measuring the role of design and design management in achieving sustainable
business success is of paramount importance. What is the role of design
in shaping purchase preference? In innovation success? In supporting corporate
strategy? In shaping retail experience? In building customer satisfaction?
In improving social and environmental benefits? Improving design effectiveness
and success? Improving business success measurements? Improving the bottom
line? How does one isolate the role of design or design management alone?
Until now, there
have been few consolidated efforts to capture and share knowledge about
this very important aspect of every business. This fall, in Vermont, the 31st
International Design Management Conference will be dedicated
to exploring and defining this elusive and yet most important topic.
DMI is proud to announce
the initial confirmed speakers for this conference:

historic Equinox features New England charm and amenities such as a spa,
indoor pool, fitness center, 18-hole golf course, and a wide range of
activities such as off road driving, falconry, mountain biking, and fly
fishing, not to mention the Vermont fall foliage. Registration
is now open to the general public. Early registration is recommended,
as this conference fills up well in advance.

Join DMI on Tuesday,
May 9 for the second online seminar from the new DMI Design Leadership
Series. Lee Green will discuss how collaborative innovation has emerged
as the best opportunity for design and brand managers to effect change
inside their organizations and for their clients, and how the results
create differentiation in the way we engage with our customers and their
experience with our brand. Innovation is not about new technology alone.
It is about relevance. It is about developing customer insights, and understanding
new market opportunity.

priorities for 2006 – 2007 in the areas of:

that address these topics are encouraged, as DMI seeks to conduct and
partner on research about design management. DMI will be actively involved
in producing publications, organizing research collaborations, and commissioning
studies on the priorities. In addition, DMI has announced an academic
conference and a research grant that will address these research priorities:

Why is my Company Having Difficulty Finding Senior Brand Talent?
By Rita Armstrong,
Recruiter, Roz Goldfarb Associates |
First of all, realize
that you are not alone. Eighty percent of my current search work is for
design talent at this level. Whether you are a corporation looking to
expand your design management team by adding someone to the “innovation”
side of the business, or you are a consultancy looking for a Design Director
to service a corporation, you are finding the pickings to be slim.
The shortage of
talent at this level is the result of several market trends. A slow economy
didn’t provide opportunities for professional development into these
senior level positions. Over the last three years, Senior Designers and
more junior talent have not been promoted as quickly as they were during
the boom years. In addition, the economy’s recovery has influenced
how we work.
Smaller pools of people have been handling larger workloads.
In the last six months it has become clear that this trend is not going
away anytime soon. Now, new hires need to happen…
and they need to happen yesterday. The problem is that there aren’t
enough talented people with the level of brand experience to fill these
needs.

Dealer Identity: Customer Loyalty and an Extraordinary Partnership
By Martin Gierke, Manager, Brand Strategy and Education, Caterpillar Inc.
From the Design Management Review, Vol. 17, No. 1, Winter 2006
Caterpillar is
an organization that has fine-tuned its brand and knows its value in the
marketplace. The dilemma is giving that value and the associated relationships
with customers a clear presence across an international network of independent
dealers. Martin Gierke probes the issues surrounding this problem and
describes what Caterpillar is doing to partner the corporate brand effectively
with the companies that actually sell and service its products.
