Design/Management/Brand 21 Conference
Re-Thinking ... Design
June 17-18, 2009
The Stanford Court, San Francisco, USA
Conference Co-chairs:
Roger Martin, Dean, Rotman School of Management
Darrel Rhea, CEO, Cheskin Added Value
The breakdowns we are currently experiencing in the world are enough to alarm even the hardiest of souls. Sitting back and watching is simply no longer an option. Re-thinking ... Design is an opportunity for the community of smart designers to collaborate on the leadership role that Design should take to shape our future. We will examine how Design thinking is becoming a change agent for transforming the deep fissures in our cultural and business systems, and creating emerging opportunities to elevate the impact of our contributions.
Re-thinking … Design will be co-chaired by two key thought leaders of our time, Roger Martin and Darrel Rhea. They will challenge the Design community to re-think Design in both macro and micro applications. At this event you can expect leading edge conversations that inspire. You’ll hear not just contemporary theory, but practical examples of premier business leaders demonstrating how they are changing the economy, healthcare, technology and culture—illuminating how design thinking is making it happen.
This year we will introduce a new format: more conversational, more condensed, more efficient, and yet still packed full of dynamic thinking. Some sessions will be “conversations” hosted by Martin and Rhea rather than traditional lectures, and will provide a more intimate and engaging discussion. Everyone will be encouraged to participate and bring to the table what we each find meaningful. The conference will culminate in a call-to-action to the Design leadership community—for social re-thinking, and a challenge to re-design that which is most important to each of us.
Look for updates at www/dmi.org/branddesign. Early registration is now open for the conference.

Seeing Around Corners: How Trend Forecasting Can Illuminate the Curves in the Road Ahead
Wednesday, March 4, 1pm EST
Valerie Jacobs, Group Director, LPK Trends
Given the volatility of the world economy over the past 18 months, our desire deepens for tools that can make sense of the future and its uncertainties. As designers we constantly “problem solve” using the knowledge we have today, and up until recently we could safely assume that consumers just wanted more of the same, but better, more “innovative.” What the Institute for the Future’s Bob Johannsen describes as the VUCA (volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous) world seems here to stay.
But what if… we did have tools to help us see around the corners of 2009 or even 2025? Employing new methodologies for creating consumers’ future state (not their present state) offers a chance for trend forecasting to play an even bigger role in design strategies.
