A New Era for Design Centers

Vol. 4, No. 3, Summer 1993

Kazuo Kimura, President, Japan International Designers’ Association, Executive Director, International Design Center, Nagoya, Japan

Nagoya is situated in Japan’s premier industrial and technological district. It is also a community shaped by a post-World War II urban plan noted for its generous open spaces and landscaping. With this design heritage, it is not surprising that, in 1989, the city was the site of the World Design Exposition and the largest ICSID Congress ever convened. Today, Kazuo Kimura outlines how the city is extending its traditional design awareness with its ambitious project for a design center hallmarked by a museum, research center, shops, and an extensive program for education and outreach.
