Should Government Promote Design? A Design Initiative for Economic Growth

Unlike some other major industrial powers—Japan and Germany, for instance—the US has never developed a national program for exploiting the economic potential of design excellence. After reviewing the history related to this state of affairs, William Hannon proposes a design-promotion model, based on the Department of Agriculture’s Cooperative Extension System, that could serve the diverse, and more region-sensitive, design-management needs of American industries and businesses.
