Made in Taiwan: Designing a New Image

Vol. 4, No. 3, Summer 1993

Robert Blaich, Principal, Blaich Associates; Janet Blaich, Writer

In a dramatic about-face, the world is discovering that the “Made-in-Taiwan” label is a mark of quality and innovation. This turnabout is a design transformation crafted and implemented under the aegis of Taiwan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs. Robert and Janet Blaich outline the three overlapping five-year plans that have made the change a reality, and describe elements—including a design center, themed design seminars, competitions, and methods for transferring design expertise—that all contribute to the success of what can be characterized as a national design-management agenda.
