The Age of Knowledge Design: A View from Japan

Vol. 20, No. 2, Spring 2009

Noboru Konno, President, KIRO (Knowledge Innovation Research Organization)

Everyone talks about innovation; but these days, even that concept has changed. Essentially, companies need to make a shift from an analytical to a creative model-from the pursuit of innovation as basically a product-driven concept, to the idea of innovation as the day-to-day practice of all members of an organization. And for the global corporation, the role of the designer is increasingly significant, giving form to the organization and to decision-making, as well as shaping the development of products and services. Noboru Konno is the president of KIRO (Knowledge Innovation Research Organization) and a professor at Tama Graduate School of Management and Information Science in Tokyo. He advocates the concept of knowledge design as a new managerial capacity for this age of "creativity management" and suggests that organizations need to assimilate the power of design to organize knowledge and fully utilize it as one of their strengths.
