Building Better: GSA’s National 3D-4D-BIM Program

Vol. 20, No. 1, Winter 2009

Peggy Ho, Visiting Fellow, GSA, National BIM Program; Charles Matta, FAIA, National Director, US General Services Administration

The US General Services Administration is one of the biggest property managers in America. Its Public Buildings Service manages more than 342 million square feet of workspace for the civilian federal government. GSA designs and builds federal workplaces, including agency headquarters, courthouses, land ports of entry, and federal office buildings, in addition to repairing and modernizing existing historic facilities. Like any property manager, GSA faces challenges: accurately measuring square footage of space, providing accurate building information to designers, communicating building renovation schedules, providing energy-efficient and sustainable facilities, and providing secure circulation systems. But there's help on the horizon. Building information modeling (BIM) technologies, as well as 3D and 4D methods, are dramatically changing the way buildings are designed, constructed, and operated, and GSA has spent the past five years implementing these advances. GSA's Peggy Ho and Charles Matta tell the story.
