Anthem Worldwide, a Schawk Strategic Design Company, announced that its packaging for Kalologie Skincare won an EX·TRACTS award (Finalist Certificate) for Best Packaging at the New York International Gift Fair (NYIGF) Winter 2010 Market. THE NYIGF is produced twice annually in New York City, and showcases the best lines across the home, lifestyle and gift spectrum. Among the criteria that judges considered were innovative design, creative use of materials/construction, and use of new materials/technology.
Smith Design, a brand development and communication firm, was commissioned to create a package design and shelf merchandiser under the Earth Best Tendercare Tots subbrand. The challenge included creating graphics that would appeal to and encourage young toddlers and moms during this sometimes difficult transition stage in a child’s development.
Congratulations to LPK’s Valerie Jacobs and Phil Best! Valerie was promoted to Vice President, Group Director, LPK Trends. Phil was named Chief Operating Officer. In this new role, he provides management and financial oversight, as well as human resources and general operations oversight, with a focus on the future state of the LPK business model.
Otis Elevator Company, the industry-leading manufacturer of commercial elevators, recently enlisted ThoughtForm to create a visual identity and website for the new Otis residential arm, Otis at Home. The new brand is targeted to homeowners, residential architects, and builders, and offers the same quality and safety as Otis’s commercial models. Otis at Home was unveiled during the January, 2010 International Builders’ Show in Las Vegas.
The Targus 4-port Smart USB Hub has been named one of the best travel gadgets of 2009 by Time. Designed by Continuum, the device features a silicon cable that serves as a protective cover for the USB ports when not in use, and a one-touch reset button that restores connectivity to all devices.

DentalVibe™, a new dental device, takes the fear and pain out of dental injections. Product design firm Bresslergroup worked with Dr. Steven G. Goldberg, DDS, to design the easy-to-use tool. Through research, they determined that steady vibration would quickly be decoded and ignored by the brain. The breakthrough discovery was engineering an intermittent pulse—applying vibration for a brief period, followed by a quick stillness period.
Larsen is sponsoring Design Intersections, a series of themed interactive dialogs among designers and representatives from other disciplines, discussing the consequences of design-induced change. Hosted by the University of Minnesota College of Design, the first dialog will be held March 18 in Minneapolis at the University of Minnesota, in the 3M Auditorium.
Corey McPherson Nash recently partnered with Biogen Idec to create a new website design for the life sciences company. Corey designed the site with an engaging user experience for a broad spectrum of audiences, highlighting Biogen Idec’s internal energy and culture of innovation. Utilizing interactive media formats, the site tells the story of Biogen Idec’s team, mission and commitment to corporate social responsibility. CMN also recently created a new user experience and streamlined Web site design for leading technology research firm, Yankee Group.
Fast Company honored frog design as one of the top ten innovative firms in design for 2010. frog has also been selected by the World Economic Forum to join its Community of Global Growth Companies, a group of more than 200 rapidly growing multinational companies that are reshaping the global economic landscape. Also, as a pro-bono project, frog designed the website for the Pecan Street Project, an Austin, Texas-based nonprofit organization that is working to help make clean energy and the smart grid a reality.
Karo continues its award-winning start to 2010 with a nod from Applied Arts. Along with printing partner Rhino Print Solutions, Karo won in the Poster or Art Print, single category, for their work on the art book Here is Home, for client Scotia Waterous.
GK Design Group’s Chairman Kenji Ekuan was recently awarded a lifetime achievement alumni award by Art Center College of Design. The award recognizes an alumnus whose career has been defined by outstanding professional and creative accomplishment. Kazuo Tanaka, President, was recently re-elected as a board member of ICSID (International Council of Societies of Industrial Design).
