Michael Courtney Design

A hearing aid designed by Stuart Karten Design for Starkey Laboratories, Inc. has been selected for inclusion in the “National Design Triennial: Why Design Now?” exhibition on view at the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum in New York through January 9, 2011. The exhibition, which examines why design thinking is an essential tool for solving some of today’s most urgent problems, features SKD’s Zon hearing aid as a powerful case study that highlights the ways that creative problem solving can improve the quality of healthcare. Mel Lim Design won a Creativity 40th Media Competition Gold award for their interface and branding work for Axure RP. The project called for strategy work to differentiate the company’s corporate logo from its product logo while redefining the company’s changing internal and external attributes. Each design element within the logo is carefully crafted to allow for scalability and further icon developments within the brand—from web, PowerPoint presentations, product features, to user interface design.

 

 

Hanson Design developed a new website for the re-launch of the world-renowned Pernod Ricard Absinthe brand, www.Pernodabsinthe.com. The site tells the Pernod Absinthe story (commonly referred to in historical literature as “la fée verte”) with rich animated video clips, timelines, and imagery.

 

 

Larsen, recently received design assignments from two new clients: Calhoun Square (via partner Architectural Alliance) for interior wayfinding signage design; and The House of Hope Presbyterian Church, for capital campaign brochure and stationery design. For their work on the Best Buy’s at15.com website, Larsen was named Official Honoree for the Charitable Organizations/Non-Profit category in the 14th Annual Webby Awards. Larsen also garnered three spots in the 2010 AIGA Minnesota Design Show for its design of the College of Visual Arts viewbook, Saint John's Bible website, and Wausau Paper® Royal brand product brochure. Larsen is a nationally renowned communications design agency with a staff of 45 and offices in Minneapolis and San Francisco.

 

 

Plan recently made two new hires. Hianta Cassam Chenaï, a French Sciences Politiques graduate, joins Plan as Operations Manager. Rachel Turner joins as a Design Planner, having previously worked as an advertising planner with Lowe and a design coordinator for Marks & Spencer. Plan’s design trends expert Alex Bradley attended the 2010 Milan Salone Internazionale in April to check out what was new and interesting and also to show his own furniture range. He exhibited his Dual Range collection, first launched at 100% Design and taken up by Liberty’s of London as part of the Italian company Ex-t’s showcase.

 

Anthem

 

Product design strategists Anthem Worldwide, a Schawk Strategic Design Company, helped Nestlé Canada Inc., a subsidiary of Nestlé S.A., bring its Nestlé Real Dairy “Natural Ice Cream” positioning to life in Canada with new packaging designs that clearly differentiate the brand within the category.
 

 

LUNAR Design recently earned a 2010 Medical Design Excellence Award in the Rehabilitation and Assistive Technology category for its role in the development of the Intel® Reader, a groundbreaking portable device that captures the image of a printed page, converts it to digital text, and reads the content aloud. Intended for use by people with learning disabilities or visual impairments, the Intel Reader has a look and feel that comprises more than functional, beautiful industrial design; through rigorous testing, research and exploration, LUNAR created a design solution that is both purposeful and personal, connecting on the most basic level with the intended user.

 

Dell

 

Dell’s sustainable product design was recently featured in Fast Company for its compostable bamboo packaging. Dell began using the bamboo packaging last year as part of an initiative to integrate sustainable packaging. Eventually, the bamboo packaging will be added to other Dell product lines, since it is cost-competitive and good for the company’s image.

 

 

Samsung

Five of Samsung Electronics’ products have been recognized by the International Forum Design Award (iF). The two-door refrigerator, full touch-screen mobile phone, compact digital camera and laser printer toner have been awarded iF Material Awards. Samsung’s eco-friendly green G2 / 3 hard drives won a Gold Award. The G2 hard drive is truly green from inside out—it is halogen-free, meets ROHS environmental standards, and features low power consumption.

Coca Cola

 

 

DMI members were recognized at the 22nd Dupont Awards for Packaging Innovation, including Coca Cola Company and Proctor & Gamble with Gold Awards, Proctor & Gamble with a Silver Award, and Reckitt Benckiser with a Notable Accomplishment.

 

 

Ologie recently won a CASE 2010 Circle of Excellence silver award for its work with Kent State University’s Centennial Campaign.

 

 

Ximedica, recently hosted an event to showcase best practices in collaborative innovation in medical devices and healthcare. Nearly two hundred healthcare innovators and leaders gathered in its medical product design and manufacturing center, located in Providence, Rhode Island. The open nature of the event reflected Ximedica’s principles and methods of collaboration that it uses to assist its clients in developing and launching market-driven clinical and consumer healthcare products.
