Course Pre-Work

  • "Developing a Framework for Design Management" by Earl N. Powell (Design Management Review reprint, supplied upon registration).

  • "18 Views on the Definition of Design Management" (Design Management Review reprint, supplied upon registration).

  • Prepare two overhead projector slides for group discussion describing how you see yourself as a manager, and how you are perceived by management.

Day One - Morning Session

  • Introductions and welcome

    • Review course objectives and agenda for the day

    • Introductions around the room (name, responsibilities)

  • What is design management? (interactive discussion)

    • How I see myself (from pre-work)

    • How I am perceived by management (from pre-work)

  • What's wrong with this picture? (interactive discussion)

    • Three Vignettes

  • The "Model" (presentation)

    • Description of success model with three part skill buckets

Day One - Afternoon Session

  • Recognizing the business role of design

  • Establishing and maintaining mutually valuable relationships

  • Implementing efficient work-with processes

Day Two - Morning Session

  • How do I see myself now?

  • Solving a real problem, right now, using the model

  • Getting to a list of actions

    • Introduction of Key Question Tool Kit

  • Development of a personal plan

  • Summary and wrap-up
