Thomas Lockwood, PhD
President and Founding Partner of Lockwood Resource
Thomas Lockwood, PhD, is recognized as a thought leader and international expert in design leadership, and integrating design and innovation into business. This involves expertise in design strategy, operations, staffing and building great design organizations. He is one of the few people in the world with a PhD in design management.
Lockwood is the President and Founding Partner of Lockwood Resource, www.lockwoodresource.com, an international recruiting firm specializing in design and innovation leadership. He is a member of the DMI Board of Directors, and is the Editor-in-chief of the DMI Review and DMI Journal. He served as president of DMI from January 2006 until May of 2011.
Prior to starting Lockwood Resource and running DMI, he directed design and brand management at Sun Microsystems, Inc. and Storage Technology Corporation (StorageTek) for 12 years, and worked for and ran several design firms for 10 years. He earned a PhD, MPhil and MBA from the University of Westminster, London, and bachelor degrees in visual design and marketing from Eastern Michigan University. His doctoral research thesis, available at www.lockwoodresource.com, determined new methods of integrated design management within large multinational corporations, in order to achieve design innovation for the business, design relevancy for the user, and design coherency for the brand.
He is a design advisor to corporations and to countries, serves on numerous boards and councils around the world, and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of the Arts in London. He is the editor of three books: Design Thinking (2010), Corporate Creativity (2008), and Building Design Strategy (2008), and is a leading advocate regarding the value of design to the triple bottom line; by improving economic, social and environmental well-being.
Tom is also a frequent design award juror for international competitions, and has been a keynote speaker or led design workshops in the U.S., Canada, Japan, Korea, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Australia, England, Scotland, Ireland, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Denmark, Finland, Belgium, Austria, the Netherlands, Poland, Turkey, and Brazil.
