Peter Phillips

Biography

Peter Phillips
Peter Phillips

Peter L. Phillips is an internationally recognized expert in developing corporate design management strategies and programs. He has more than thirty years experience as a senior corporate design manager, a consultant, author, and lecturer. He distinguished himself in the corporate world as Director of Corporate Design for the Gillette Company, and as Director of Corporate Identity and Design for Digital Equipment Corporation. In both positions he had global responsibilities for managing strategic design functions.

Mr. Phillips’ corporate career has crossed several industries. He has been a television producer and set designer for Group “W” Westinghouse Broadcasting, Director of Promotional Program Development and Design for Stanmar Inc., a major East Coast resort developer and operator, and president of his own design management firm.

As a consultant, Peter has developed numerous global design strategy programs for many Fortune 500 companies. He also advises corporations on restructuring, and repositioning their in-house corporate design groups. Peter takes a highly pragmatic, business-based approach to all of his assignments, believing that design, and the management of corporate design functions, is a problem-solving discipline rather than a simple aesthetic exercise.

He has been the recipient of numerous awards and honors including the prestigious Financial World Gold Trophy for design of the Best Annual Report in the United States, as well as for development of promotions, promotional material design, communications, and for designing and implementing effective brand management systems.

Mr. Phillips is the author of “Creating the Perfect Design Brief: How to Manage Design for Strategic Advantage,” Allworth Press 2004, which has also been published in Spanish, Portuguese, and Estonian versions. He is the author of “Principles of Managing the Corporate Design Department,” a section of the anthology “AIGA Professional Practices in Graphic Design, Allworth Press, 2008. He contributed to Careers by Design by Roz Goldfarb, Allworth Press, 2001, and Revealing The Corporation, by John M.T. Balmer and Stephen A. Greyser, Routledge, Taylor & Francis Group, 2003.

Peter Phillips has been a columnist for both Graphis and New Design magazines, as well as author of numerous articles for the Design Management Review. The British Design Council engaged him to create a knowledge cell and video on design briefs for their Web site: (www.designcouncil.org.uk/briefing)

Phillips has developed case studies on brand identity for DMI and the Harvard Business School that are distributed by the Harvard Business School. Phillips serves as a member and secretary of the board of directors of the Design Management Institute (DMI).

He founded the DMI Professional Development Program, and develops and conducts seminars for design management professionals worldwide. His seminars are offered as in-house, on-site, training for corporations, and with general open registration through DMI. Mr. Phillips earned a Master of Arts Degree from the School of Fine Arts, University of California at Los Angeles, and a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree at the University of Connecticut.
