From user-centered design to designing for service
Lucy Kimbell, Clark Fellow in Design Leadership, Saïd Business School, University of Oxford
Over the past decade a new kind of design field has emerged that is concerned with the design of services. Although there are similarities with existing professions such as brand and experience design, designing for service takes designers even closer to questions of management and strategy. Lucy Kimbell will trace these developments within design as part of a wider shift towards services in which understanding how value is co-created becomes key to designers and managers. She argues that designing for service has the potential to reshape all design fields, not just “service design,” with implications for practice and education.
Biography: Lucy Kimbell
Lucy Kimbell is Clark Fellow in Design Leadership at Saïd Business School, University of Oxford. Since 2005, she has taught design and design management for the MBA and researched designing for service and managing as designing. Previously, she taught interaction design at the Royal College of Art, and for many years led design teams working on complex mobile and Internet-based service innovations. Current projects include working with the United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research on the role of design in public policy.
