New Thinking Made Real

David Kester, Chief Executive, Design Council (UK)

David Kester

As Western economies chase economic renewal in the slipstream of rapidly emerging nations, the smart business response is all about re-invention and innovation. But establishing new business models and services in the eye of the storm is tough. David Kester takes a practical look at how design can help turn economic challenges into opportunities and competitive threats into enterprise. He will draw on the lessons from current Design Council innovation projects within industry and government and share tools and insights.

Biography: David Kester

David was appointed Chief Executive of the Design Council in May 2003. He has refocused the organization as the national strategic body for design, leading central government policies and regional programs that strengthen competitiveness, drive innovation, and support growth in the creative economy.

Prior to the Design Council, David held senior leadership roles within business, design, and the environmental sector, including nine years as Chief Executive of D&AD, and four years at Friends of the Earth. His tenure at the design and advertising organization D&AD, is associated with a turnaround in performance and reputation, including internationalizing its award scheme and building its education programs.

He is a council member of the Royal College of Art and The Royal Society of Arts, a trustee of the Kingston Rose Theatre, board member of the Design Business Association, and regular commentator and advisor to government on the creative economy, enterprise and innovation.

The Design Council is the national strategic body for design in the UK. We believe design can help people to do what they do, better. We’re funded by the UK government, and we promote the use of design throughout the UK’s businesses and public services. We demonstrate that design can play a vital role in strengthening our economy and improving our society. We have a goal—to help UK managers become the best users of design in the world, supported by the most skilled and capable design professionals.
