Strategic Design: Solving Complex Challenges

Marco Steinberg, Associate Professor of Architecture, Harvard University Graduate School of Design; Strategic Design Director, Finnish Innovation Fund

Society is facing a broad range of complex challenges—healthcare, sustainability, education—that reside at the intersection of what we know. Because key decision makers cannot always visualize and synthesize the complete picture, they are often blind-sided by unintended consequences of their actions, which ultimately produce no net improvement. As an integrative discipline, design is uniquely positioned to fill this strategic need.

Biography: Marco Steinberg

Marco Steinberg’s work focuses on developing strategic design processes that enable more effective solutions to complex societal problems such as health care. Steinberg is currently Associate Professor of Architecture at the Harvard Design School and Strategic Design Director at the Finnish Innovation Fund.

At Harvard, Steinberg’s research develops system design approaches to improving outcomes in healthcare. He currently leads the Stroke Pathways project: a strategic redesign of the stroke care delivery system, aimed at identifying strategic improvements in care through a systemic inception-to-implementation model. His work also includes developing innovative organizational approaches to complex problem-solving, and improved competitiveness through design. His research has extensively integrated with industry and government.

Professor Steinberg’s responsibilities at Sitra include meeting internal strategic design needs as well as charting new forward-oriented opportunities to help Sitra meet its mission of national innovation and well being.

With extensive industry experience in Italy, Finland and the US, Steinberg is an active participant in numerous national innovation programs, including member of Italy’s Lombardy region’s “Meta district” committee, advising government on new SME funding policies to promote industry’s competitiveness through design research.

He received his BFA and BArch from Rhode Island School of Design, and his MArch with Distinction from the Harvard Design School.
