How to Please a Woman

Agnete Enga, Senior Industrial Designer, Cofounder Femme Den, Smart Design

Women compose half the population and make or influence 80 percent of all purchases. However, their needs are largely ignored by products and services on today’s market. Are current design, engineering and marketing methods inherently female-friendly? It’s a real problem, but also a real opportunity. Females are complex beings—in this talk, we’ll discuss myths and realities about women, and provide guidelines to uncover their true needs and values.

Biography: Agnete Enga

Agnete Enga is a senior industrial designer at Smart Design, a multi-disciplinary design consultancy. Originally from Norway, Agnete brings a unique set of eyes to each design problem. She has guided projects in the areas of consumer electronics, fashion, and kitchen products. Clients she has worked with in the past include OXO, Hewlett-Packard, Microsoft, and Nike. She has won multiple design awards and her work has been published in Time Magazine and Fast Company.

Agnete holds a bachelors degree in Industrial Design from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, and is one of the founding members of the Femme Den.

The Femme Den is an internal movement at Smart Design dedicated to studying gender through design. Their independent research and expertise enables a deeper understanding of psychological differences between men and women, and how this is affecting the way they interact with products. We believe that designing with ideas and methodologies that appeal to women will result in design solutions that are more appealing to everyone. Within the last six months, members of Femme Den have made keynote presentations at the IDSA conference, conducted a workshop at the Design & Emotion conference in Hong Kong, and presented at the Outdoor Retailer Show.
