Although I have contributed to the DMI Journal and DMI academic conferences over the past decade, this was my first time attending the professional annual conference. My experience during the two days in New York City was even more than I expected. It was powerful.

First of all, I was surprised that people openly shared their experiences and thoughts on design and business issues. Everyone was so energetic that I never got tired of meeting new people. DMI helped me connect to a large group of design and business leaders, it is a real community!

In addition, the invited speakers motivated everyone with a variety of views and ideas on “Design at Scale.” They shared interesting stories behind their projects and suggested their insights and experiences in design practices on diverse scales—truly the voice of design leaders.

Finally, the delivery of presentations was unique and different. Negotiation and collaboration between the designer and marketer at Aeropostale; strategic partnerships between clients and consultants at Facebook, PepsiCo, and Zappos.com; teamwork with the VP and the Director at Coca-Cola; interactive presentations with the partner and the researcher at Doblin—it was a real mix.

I’ve started to illustrate my memories. More episodes will be illustrated shortly.
