Design Value—A Strategy for Business Success

Professor Dr. Peter Zec, President, red dot

Peter Zec

Designers have a particularly important role to play wherever they are involved in the care, planning, and shaping of our environment. The way we order our world impacts our cultural identity in some ways even more than our interaction with manufactured goods. The layout of streets, squares, and buildings, as well as residential and business districts, exercises a considerable influence on our quality of life. In no other area of life do human beings and the artificial surroundings they create encroach upon the natural world to such a great extent as they do in urban spaces.

Professor Dr. Peter Zec

Professor Dr. Peter Zec has been the president of red dot GmbH & Co. KG since May 2001. Since 1991, he has been president of the internationally acclaimed institution for design promotion, the Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen e.V. In 1993, he accepted a Professorship for Business Communication Management at the Hochschule für Technik und Wirtschaft (University of Applied Sciences) in Berlin. He founded the red dot institute for advanced design studies in 2009.

Zec was President of the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design (ICSID) from September 2005 to October 2007, and is now an ICSID Senator. From October 2006 to October 2007 he was the Chairperson of the IDA (International Design Alliance).

Zec has worked as a communication and design consultant for numerous companies in Germany and abroad for more than 20 years. He is a sought-after speaker who has given lectures in more than 30 countries. In October 2006, WirtschaftsWoche, one of Germany’s main business magazines, rated him as one of the “20 creative lateral thinkers who changed the face of their company or created entirely new markets.”

He is the publisher of the red dot design yearbook and the international yearbook communication design. Design Value – A Strategy for Business Success was published in 2010. Peter Zec lives in Essen and Berlin.

The red dot design award

With the red dot design award, the Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen has created one of the most internationally acclaimed design competitions. The competition received over 12,000 applications from more than 60 countries in 2009, making the competition one of the largest design competitions worldwide. The “red dot” has established itself internationally as one of the most sought-after quality marks for good design. The Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen displays the award-winning products in the red dot design museum for at least one year.

The red dot is awarded to work which excels through its excellent design quality. The jury appraises the products according to different criteria such as innovation, functionality, formal quality, ergonomics, symbolic and emotional content. The red dot design award includes several different disciplines: the “red dot award: product design,” “red dot award: communication design,” and “red dot award: design concept,” which has been organized every year in Singapore since 2005.
