Design Thinkers: New Leaders in a New Modern Society?
Mauro Porcini, Head of Global Design, Consumer & Office Business Division, 3M
In a society where for the first time ever, four different generations live and work together in the same organizations, a new form of leader is growing and is assuming new relevance in the quest to produce economic growth and sustainable innovation. Some like to define these people as Design Thinkers. Who are they and why they are playing such a strategic role?
Mauro Porcini
Mauro Porcini is Head of Global Design at 3M, Consumer & Office Business division worldwide. Since 2002 he has been managing 3M’s design strategies and projects, leading internal teams based in USA, Italy, China, and Japan, and collaborating with a broad variety of external partners. Working closely with the business and R&D leaders of 3M, Porcini’s mission is to evolve and nurture the company internal design culture, leveraging the technology heritage and background to produce innovation and growth with a new experience-driven approach.
Porcini is a regular guest speaker and lecturer at major design and business conferences, universities and events. He is co-author of the book, Vincere con le Idee – Innovazione Design Performance. He is member of the Advisory Council of DMI, of the Advisory Board of the International Child Art Foundation of Washington, DC, and he sits on the Advisory Board of the German Company GTG GmBH.
Under his leadership, his teams have been recognized with several worldwide awards, including the red dot Design Award, the Good Design Award, the Selezione Compasso d’Oro, the IF and the PLUS Awards, and numerous design and utility patents.
Before joining 3M, Porcini founded, with the Italian showbiz producer and music star Claudio Cecchetto, the design firm Wisemad SrL, where he led creative projects for clients in the technology, multimedia, and entertainment industries. His projects on “Smart Clothing” have been showcased at the Louvre Museum in Paris and in the Seoul Art Center. Prior to this venture, Porcini was a consultant for Philips Design in Milan, where he worked on “wearable technologies.” He studied product and strategic design at the University Politecnico of Milan, Italy, and at the National College of Art and Design in Dublin, Ireland. Since March 2010, Porcini has been based at 3M USA, in St Paul, Minnesota, with an office at 3M Italy, in Segrate, Milano.
