Tom Lockwood and Robyn Waters changing the conversation. |
Robyn Waters, RW Trend LLC
Design has moved from a “process” to a “philosophy.” Systems thinking is the framework for the new philosophy.
We need to CHANGE the CONVERSATION
“From change is the only constant” to “complexity is the big opportunity.”
“Creativity is personal development, not just a business innovation tool.”
-
Not “What if?” Instead,“ Why This”?
How can designers help keep Honest Books?
How can designers visualize the Cost of the Status Quo?
“The new Currency is Simplicity.”
“Green products will be at the highest level of performance.”
“If you can’t afford to have it fail, it isn’t an experiment.”
“Design leadership means facilitating value-added simplicity.”
We’ve moved from an industrial society to a design and innovation society… it’s time for an American Design Council.
“Systems thinking is where art and functionality meet.”
Organize for growth and innovation in a global world by building on your framework, à la GE. For exponential growth, a company has to move from A) core market and core technologies; to B) adjacency and related markets with new technologies; to C) totally new markets via systems thinking.
We need to REFRAME the MISSION:
“Mayor of Fast City—how do I get votes?” (Alan Webber)
“Everyone has an aisle and a window.” (Joe Ferry/Virgin Atlantic)
From “I need to change my job” to “I need to change my Flight.”
Speed vs. Scale: “Limo to Lounge in ten minutes.”
From Fear to Free, From Stem to Steam
“Green is green.”
Systems thinking can help us solve really big wicked social problems (healthcare/obesity) and logistical problems, (food supply chain).
“In 20 years, literacy will be the ability to read and write code.”
