Design is on a roll—governments in both the West and emerging economies are emphasizing its importance in creating innovation and growth and improving the quality of life for citizens. Businesses are looking to design to fuel innovation activities and provide a response to low cost competition from Asian companies. So why is this a troubling time for designers—what is the paradox of success that leads many designers to be unsure of the future? This presentation uses examples from the UK and India to illustrate challenges and opportunities for both advanced design economies and challenger design economies.
