Functionally Challenged: Designing Functional Objects with a Conceptual Heart and Soul

Thomas Loeser, Professor, University of Wisconsin-Madison

Thomas Loeser
Thomas Loeser

A central focus of this presentation will be a discussion of the value and importance of innovative design that pushes conceptual boundaries, and challenges central ideas. Particularly, how can basic forms be restructured, their potential function called into question, while preserving the core concept, and profoundly adding value? Loeser will discuss his design philosophy, how he produces and distributes his work, and where he discovers its real challenges. His presentation will include examples of studio furniture he has designed and built over the last 20 years.
