The 27th International Design Management
Conference
Chatham Bars Inn
Chatham, Cape Cod, Massachusetts, USA
October 20-24, 2002
Overview
How can design meet the needs of business when the economy remains
fickle, lacks direction, and resources remain scarce? Finding an
answer to this difficult question presents a serious challenge.
We all know and respect organizations that do it all right. We admire
how good design has touched everything they do, how they always
seem to know where they are headed, and find opportunities in the
latest technology and/or use it effectively. These questions and
thoughts have come from many different sources and have guided us
in developing this conference.
Our objective has two parts: First, to find leading edge
thinkers that will share their best on new demands for organizational
performance, new insights on formulating effective organization
and design strategy, and all aspects of new and emerging technologies
impacting design management. Second, to expand the tradition
of extensive discussion among participants and achieve higher levels
of exchange. New approaches, including pre-conference surveys, conference
roundtables and facilitated dialogue sessions will make this conference
a rich learning experience for each participant.
DMI Professional Development Conferences provide knowledge, strategies,
tactics, and skills that design and management professionals need
to advance their careers and meet contemporary business challenges.
These educational conferences, along with DMI Seminars, DMI Roundtables,
and DMI Dialogues, form the foundation of the DMI Design Management
Certificate Program. Credit for attending this conference can be
applied towards fulfilling the requirements of the Certificate Program,
to be announced this fall and launched in 2003.
Enhancing the traditions and legacy of this prestigious conference,
the focus will be on design leadership with high level presentations
and discussions in the areas of products, communication, marketing,
research, strategy, technology and organizational behavior. Some
key speakers include: John Patrick, Author, Net Attitude;
Elizabeth Sanders, Ph.D., Creative Researcher and Founder, SonicRim;
Ed Kensinger, Manager, Identity & Design for Siemens; Gerald Nadler,
Ph.D., Author, Breakthrough Thinking; Andrew Zolli, Futurist;
and Scott Waters, Industrial Design Manager, Segway. The new DMI
Roundtables will complement the traditional DMI Dialogue Sessions.
The roundtables will be guided by pre-conference surveys on the
biggest challenges facing design managers today, and will allow
attendees to participate in engaging debates with experts.
Who should attend?
Senior design managers, their peer managers and academics from corporate,
consultant, and institutional backgrounds typically participate
in this unique event. These high-level managers attend to immerse
themselves in an intense four-day educational experience, where
the learning comes from formal presentations as well as informal
discussion and interaction among participants. Many DMI members
and peers have attended for several years, coming back to continue
to learn and share their wisdom while creating valuable personal
and professional networks.
