| The 26th International Design Management
Conference
Chatham Bars Inn
Chatham, Cape Cod, Massachusetts, USA
October 14-18, 2001
Overview
The
products and services most valued by customers are shaped through
a variety of complex decision-making processes and influences. Every
decision affects how the customer perceives and experiences these
products and servicesyet many decisions are made informally
and arbitrarily. Designers are experts at shaping the user-centered
aspects of products and services, and the depth of their involvement
is critical in determining the degree of market success. The most
successful companies are those that have infused design awareness
into their corporate values, building a platform to guide all product
and service development decisions and resulting in excellence down
to the last detail.
Examining how design decisions are made can provide fundamental
insight into how customer value is created, and learning how processes
are managed can make the difference between success and failure.
Meeting the challenge of infusing design awareness into an organization’s
fundamental values forms the core responsibility of design management
today. The primary focus of this conference will be on the design
manager's role in meeting this crucial challenge.
Joseph Pine, co-author of The Experience Economy, will be the keynote
speaker. Mr. Pine is cofounder of Strategic Horizons LLP, a thinking
studio dedicated to helping businesses conceive and design new ways
of adding value to their economic offerings.
