Design-Based Leadership in the 21st Century

The 25th International Design Management Conference

Chatham Bars Inn

Chatham, Cape Cod, Massachusetts, USA

October 22-26, 2000

Survival and success in the new century will fundamentally be driven by the relationship between the customer and the manifestations of commerce – all the experiences customers have with products and services. Success strategies utilizing design will come from an obsession and a dedication to creating lasting customer impressions ensuring that all experiences with products and services engage customer interest and embody customer respect. To achieve this, a design-based leadership competency for the individual and for the organization is critical. Furthermore, to utilize this resource, the leader’s challenge is to “stand in the future” in order to make decisions TODAY that will prepare the organization for those things that lie ahead. Design-based leadership allows you to make that leap.

In the 21st century, design leadership must recognize both the emotional and rational side of the customers. Beyond visual delight, customers expect products and services that simplify and enrich their lives. Design’s role is therefore of the utmost importance. Its effectiveness depends on the recognition and placement of strategic design management as a driver for organization leadership. This conference offers a rich collection of ideas, challenges, issues and opportunities to help design managers to become leaders in their organization and their professsion.
