Bruce Nussbaum

Since the late Eighties, Bruce Nussbaum has been the leading business journalist advocating the effective use of design in business. He has untiringly worked with the editors of BusinessWeek, the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA) and the Design Management Institute to bring more attention to design in business. With IDSA, Mr. Nussbaum established in the early Nineties the annual BusinessWeek/IDSA Design Awards. In 1999, on the summation panel of the international meeting of the International Congress of Societies of Industrial Design (ICSID), the International Council of Graphic Design Associations (ICOGRADA) and the International Federation of Interior Architects/ Designers (IFI), Leila Vignelli, a leading New York designer, cited this awards program that Mr. Nussbaum, “As one of the most important contributions to the advancement of design in the 20th Century.”

About Bruce Nussbaum

Bruce Nussbaum is BusinessWeek’s editorial page editor, a position he assumed in February 1993. He is also an essayist and commentator on economic and social issues. Mr. Nussbaum edits the magazine's weekly Economic Viewpoint column and also writes frequently on design. He analyzes the annual Industrial Designers Excellence Awards and the BusinessWeek/Architectural Record AIA Awards for the magazine.

 

Mr. Nussbaum joined BusinessWeek in 1977 and started the international finance section. In 1980, he became head of the foreign news section, focusing on international finance, international business and technological change. In 1985, he left BusinessWeek to become executive editor of Manhattan, Inc, and returned to BusinessWeek in 1986 as senior writer. Prior to joining BusinessWeek, Mr. Nussbaum was a reporter for the Far Eastern Economic Review in Asia and The American Banker in New York.

 

In addition to his numerous cover stories for the magazine, Mr. Nussbaum is the author of two books: The World after Oil: the Shifting Axis of Power and Wealth and Good Intentions, an inside look at medical research on AIDS. His essays have appeared in The Best Business Stories of the Year—2002 and The Best American Political Writing—2004. Mr. Nussbaum is a recipient of awards from the Sigma Delta Chi Journalism Society, the Overseas Press Club, the West Point Society, and the Hofstra University's School of Business. He has received the Bronze Apple and Personal Recognition Award from the Industrial Designers Society of America. He holds a BA in political science from Brooklyn College and an MA in political science from the University of Michigan. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and has served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in the Philippines.
