2006 DMI Design Management Team of the Year

The Design Management Institute is proud to announce the establishment of the DMI “Design Management Team of the Year” award. This honor will be granted to design management teams that demonstrate exceptional business practice. This year, the criterion is based on longevity in the field, coupled with relevancy of design work past and present.

The 2006 DMI Design Management Team of the Year was introduced at DMI’s 31st International Design Management Conference in Manchester, Vermont. The inaugural award was issued to two leaders in the industry who have succeeded in 80 years of practice: Philips Design and Teague.

Philips Design’s CEO, Stefano Marzano stated, “Philips Design is honored and privileged to receive this recognition from DMI. We are dedicated to furthering the cause of design in creating an attractive and sustainable quality of life, and passionate about developing and establishing design as a strategy for growth, innovation and new business development.”

During the past 80 years, design at Philips has evolved from a styling exercise to a sophisticated, key driver of innovation. With approximately 450 professionals at various locations covering Europe, Asia, and North America, Philips Design creates for Royal Philips Electronics, as well as other top global brands. The mission of The Netherlands-based leader is to create a harmonious relationship between people, objects and the natural/man-made environment.

Philips Design is an important driver in making the Philips brand promise of ‘sense and simplicity’ tangible. Philips’products have touched the lives of almost everyone—from light bulbs to televisions to X-ray equipment to vacuum cleaners, not to mention the countless ‘invisible’components inside. Philips Design continues to evolve and progress and to find new ways of empowering and helping people, because everyone at Philips remains united in their conviction of the importance of design in people’s lives.

John Barratt, President and CEO of Teague, stated, “In an industry that is ever-changing, and ever improving, it’s a true honor to receive such recognition, and a real delight to receive it in conjunction with my good friends at Philips Design. This has been an amazing year for Teague, celebrating 80 remarkable years of culture-defining design; we are inspired by our rich heritage, and use it to inform our future focused point of view.”

Founded in 1926 by Walter Dorwin Teague, Seattle-based Teague is an award-winning industrial design firm, internationally recognized for the past 80 years as a thoughtful team with a talent forcreating evocative designs. Forging longterm, committed relationships with clients–such as their 60-year design partnership with The Boeing Company–Teague’s interdisciplinary studios are sought out for their unique perspectives and truly collaborative spirit. Teague continues its innovative work with clients such as Microsoft, Hewlett-Packard, Panasonic, Samsung, Xbox, and Nike.
