Around the world, a mass movement of design researchers and practitioners are using their capabilities to enable innovation in complex systems and organizations across public and private sectors alike. ’Next Wave’ will address the new design knowledge being created, the new forms of practice emerging, and how research and practice can stimulate and learn from each other.

The ADMC18 Conference is Made up of Three Parts:



Research Paper Presentations:

Presentation of all the peer reviewed academic research papers selected for deliberation. The call for papers is open in the following six conference tracks:

  • Design Research-Led Innovation

    Design’s Role as a Catalyst for Innovation

  • Business: Design and Design Management for Economic Growth

    Design Research-led Work for Products, Services, Business Models

  • Design, Leadership, and Organization Design

    Design Research Surrounding Internal Processes in the Area of Design Thinking, Design Management Futures, and Leadership. 

  • Public Sector & Transportation

    Design Research-led Work for Public Sector Services, Government, Education, and Transportation.

  • Healthcare & Society

    Design Research-led Work for Health, Wellness, Universal Design, Environment, and Sustainability.

  • Open Track For Papers That Do Not Directly Fit Themed Tracks

    Eg. Fashion, Architecture, Service Design, Etc…

R+B: Design Research Meets Design Business

Partnerships between academia, industry and government are the new normal; collaboration and knowledge-transfer is capable of changing the course of companies, industries, economies and governments.

At the 2018 Academic Design Management Conference (ADMC), nine 1 hour presentations R+B (Research + Business) will be held during the 2-day conference that highlight collaborations between educators and business leaders. An example of partnership workshops may include the opportunity to share best practices in:

  • Innovation Lab partnerships
  • Shared material science / materials development collaborations
  • Health technology partnerships
  • Design research applications in service or experience design

The dmi:FuturED Project: 

Agile entries into old industries, new dynamics in markets, and blurring lines between disciplines demand designers acquire new or additional skills. Design education is being upended by challenges to traditional approaches, and by calls for new methodologies. A better understanding of changing dynamics in global design education is needed.

The DMI FuturEd Project is a global survey of 4 aspects of future design education: 

  • Critical design skills
  • Optimal teaching tools
  • Educational environments
  • Learning methodologies



Call For Papers


Register at Conference Management Website

Submissions are being accepted at the conference website now. All interested in submitting a paper abstract, attending, or learning more about this conference should register at the conference management website for regular updates and deadline notices.




Abstracts should be less than 500 words in length and include working title, summary of paper, description of methodology used (if appropriate), contribution to the field, and implications for theory and practice.


Author names should NOT be identified in the abstract or the body of the paper. Authors should be referred to in the text or notes in the third person only. Full papers must be previously unpublished



Abstract Submission Process

All abstracts, workshops and papers must be be submitted via our conference management website. Paper abstracts will be assessed and accepted authors/presenters will be notified on 28 February 2018. If accepted, authors will be invited to submit a full paper due on 4 April, 2018. To submit your abstract, please follow these steps:

  1. Register on to the conference management website and create your account.
  2. Once logged in select 'Your Submissions,' then 'DMI Abstract Submission,' and complete the submission form including the following items:
    1. Authors and affiliations
    2. Abstract/Workshop title
    3. Text of your abstract (maximum 500 words)
    4. The track(s) you wish to be considered for
    5. Provide keywords for your abstract
    6. Add any comments for the review committee.

  3. Click Proceed.

Abstracts will be stored in our conference management platform where they will be considered for acceptance. Authors of accepted abstracts will be notified on 28 February with details of submitting their paper via our conference management website by 4 April where they will be anonymously reviewed by at least two reviewers.

Full Papers

All papers submitted will be peer-reviewed in a double-blind process and considered for publication in the dmi:Journal, a globally recognized journal of Design Management.

We welcome any research approach or type of paper including conceptual, empirical and critical literature reviews. However, we expect high standards of scholarship within the papers in terms of establishing the theoretical context, explicating the methods of inquiry, and reporting results that may aid other researchers. Full papers should be between 4000–6000 words in length.



Conference Presentations

At least one author/presenter of accepted papers/workshops must attend the conference and present their work.




Proceedings from the conference will be submitted to scholarly databases for indexing and published digitally on the DMI website (
